Conductor Alpesh Chauhan Piano Benjamin Grosvenor Thomas Adès Three-piece Suite from Powder Her Face Grieg Piano Concerto Walton Symphony No.1 Two enfants terribles frame Grieg's evergreen concerto, played by the marvellous British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. In his sensational 1995 opera, Powder Her Face, the 24-year-old Thomas Adès cast a sardonic eye over the sexual hypocrisy of the British upper classes. This exuberant suite is Adès' version of thirties popular music, with a large helping of tango, seen through a diamond-hard lens. Sixty years earlier, the 'bright young thing' of English music was William Walton. His first symphony is breathless, loud, and exhilarating. Fast-rising British conductor Alpesh Chauhan leads the APO in a cracker of a programme.
